job description - Development Engineer - Greenfield Projects

Our client has a current opportunity for a Development Engineer - Greenfield Projects on a permanent basis. The position will be based in Cape Town or Johannesburg.

Please take note of the following minimum requirements -

  • Min 3-5 years' experience working for Eskom on the grid connection side
  • Experience gathered working for an IPP/Developer who partake in REIPPP bidding
  • Proven experience providing insight into bidding/business development teams
  • An Engineering degree, at minimum

Key Responsibilitie

  • Manage grid connection applications and approval processes,
  • Optimisation and negotiation of grid connection engineering designs and solutions,
  • Working with the business development project teams to manage other technical project inputs,
  • Assessment and mitigation of project risks,
  • Drafting of technical grid, electrical and other specifications,
  • Undertake due diligence processes including site visits and assessments,
  • Use of modelling tools such as WAsP and WindPro but also PVSyst, CAD, GIS, HOMER and in-house software,
  • Selection and management of third-party technical advisors and experts,
  • Development of accurate cost and yield estimates for use in financial models,
  • Interpretation of project documents (primarily grid agreements and grid code specifications but also PPA, JDA, GSA, MOU, ESIA etc) and incorporation of requirements into contractors' documents (primarily EPC and O&M Contracts),
  • Management of site technical investigations including ground investigations and grid assessments,
  • Manage contractor tendering and negotiation processes
  • Manage Lender's and Owner's Engineers and the associated relationships, communication and information flow,
  • Management of project development and construction schedules,
  • Participate in planning and selection of resourcing for construction management staff,
  • Monitoring of project construction activities,
  • Maintaining strong interfaces with all project disciplines including legal, E&S, finance and HR

Experience, Knowledge and Qualification

  • Engineering degree or significant technical training or experience in the electrical engineering field,
  • Significant experience in the South African energy industry either as a technical advisor, Development Engineer, a Developer or Consultant,
  • Experience within a technical department at ESKOM,
  • Experience in renewable project design and optimisation,
  • Experienced in developing and negotiating contracts including, construction contracts, grid connection agreements and power purchase agreements,
  • Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of Lender's, Owner's Engineers, Lender's Engineer and contractors,
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
